Hair Loss Q & A

What causes hair loss?

Though most people expect gradual thinning as they age, some conditions cause a sudden loss of large patches of hair. You can start to lose your hair for many reasons, including:

  • Taking certain medications
  • Undergoing cancer treatment
  • Wearing tight braids and ponytails
  • Experiencing emotional or physical stress
  • Having an autoimmune condition
  • Developing a fungal infection
  • Developing a nutritional deficiency

The most common cause of hair loss, however, is a genetic condition called androgenetic alopecia.

What type of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia?

You probably know this condition as male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness. You inherit androgenetic alopecia, which leads to hair loss by making your hair follicles hypersensitive to hormones.

When exposed to the hormone, the follicles shrink and start producing thinner hair. Eventually, the follicle stops growing hair altogether.

Androgenetic alopecia in men causes the classic pattern of a receding hairline and hair loss on the top of their head.

In women, this type of hair loss causes general thinning over their entire scalp. You may first notice the thinning at your part and then see it expand, or it could affect your whole head.

What type of treatment restores hair loss?

For the first step, Dr. Tsoi determines the cause of your hair loss. If you have an underlying medical condition, treating that problem often reverses your hair loss.

When you have androgenetic alopecia, Dr. Tsoi treats it with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections.

How does PRP treat hair loss?

PRP contains a high concentration of platelets mixed with some plasma, the liquid part of your blood. Platelets live in your bloodstream, where they have the essential job of accelerating healing, regulating inflammation, and triggering the growth of new blood vessels.

Dr. Tsoi makes your PRP treatment in the office by drawing a blood sample and processing it in a centrifuge. The centrifuge separates the platelets and plasma from the other blood cells, leaving PRP the doctor uses to treat your hair loss.

Dr. Tsoi injects the PRP into the hair follicles in the balding or thinning areas of your head. The platelets then stimulate the follicles, promoting new hair growth, increasing hair thickness, and slowing down your hair loss.

When you notice your hair thinning or see signs of balding, don’t wait to consult with Dr. Tsoi. Call or book an appointment online today to learn the cause of your hair loss and start treatment.
